STEELHEADS

A proposal for an exhibition of recent welded steel sculptures by James S. Korpan.

The natural world and its biological manifestation provide James Korpan with an inexhaustible source of mystery. The welded steel sculptures presented at this time are not literal representations of actual fish or humans as much as they are the artists expressed reactions to the concepts of biological entities. The tangible works are an amalgam of the observed, the remembered, and the imagined. Korpan invokes the memory of the originally conceived subject and finds an emotional and spiritual equivalence. Acknowledged in this process is recognition of the arbitrary character of memory and archetypical imaging.

The works included in "STEELHEADS 2005" have been created over the past ten years. They are the "portrait busts" of concepts and descriptive passages. The works are meant to be contemplative pieces addressed in the round.

The artist, as sculptor, is arranging and exploring space within form. The traditional "form in space" approach is not ignored but enhanced. Crystalline matter is used to gesture or imply organic form and give meaning to subject matter.
